Masonry

Masonry

Some houses in the Czech villages in Romania show the oldest types of building structures, which were being used here as late as in the second third of the 19th century. In many places, the original brick structures, typical gables, original roofs and ceilings, and in some places the original materials have been preserved. These remnants of building development and historic materials are important evidence of traditional architecture. They demonstrate the art of our ancestors and the way in which they adapted to natural conditions, raw materials and the climate. They show how our ancestors thought about and solved technological challenges.

Gables

The oldest gables of the houses were covered with planks with weatherboards or large wooden shingles. In both cases there were small ventilation windows. The roofs of the older houses had a small hipped roof in the front, the gable on the courtyard side was without a hipped roof. The newer buildings, with their long side facing the street, no longer have hipped roofs. Later on, due to the insufficient insulation and durability of the material, the original wooden gables were torn down and rebuilt in brick or modified in various ways, e.g. by adding sheet metal.

Roofs

The gabled roofs with a small hipped roof in the front facade were originally covered with shingles and thatch, later with fired tiles or cheaper sheet metal. Fired tile is now the traditional as well as the most durable material. It can be found not only on most residential houses, but also on farm buildings, which shows how important these buildings are to the local people. Occasionally, you can see some metal roofs. The roof frames have a simple construction, often using purlins and collar beams (see image below).
